planting mangroves to heal the earth
ever wonder why we are planting mangroves? indonesia has the highest bio-diversity of blue carbon ecosystem mainly mangroves and sea grasses. however in merely ten years we might lose 80,000 hectares of mangroves and 40 percent of sea grasses at the current rate of activities.
mangrove planting has grabbed us for the last two years. firstly, they can sequester carbon four times more than rainforests can. second, they support bio-diversity and prevent coastal erosion. third, we believe that climate change problems give rise to unforeseen challenges such as novel pathogens and microbes. it is the universal law of nature -the lost habitat made the animals live closer to human. fourth, we create income for the mangrove farmers, an important socio-economic impacts. lastly, mangroves are majestic and gorgeous and can generate eco tourism to further strengthen green economy
creating socio-economic impacts for the tree farmers
after two weeks campaigning for national tree planting day 2020 we secured purchases and donations enough to cover 1570 mangroves.
we realized 2020 has been a very challenging year for all of us, but your generosity surpassed beyond belief. with success rate of close to 100 percent by the end of 2020 we will have 2025 mangroves planted in the coastal areas of kepulauan seribu, creating a living wage for the mangrove farmers. in early 2021 we received donations enough for 168 more mangroves, then planting 50 more in celebrating 2021 earth day and 178 more for independence day. in 2023 we started a partnership with pak agus bei of graha indah mangrove center for additional 250 mangroves, making the total planted amount to 2671 mangroves to date.
each mangrove will absorb 12.3 kg CO2 per month, for at least the next 100 years. in 2022 we have surpassed 100% carbon neutrality for our small fermentary, but we keep on planting. this is one of the channels through which we carve a better planet and future.
in 2022 we started planting 629 trees in heavily-deforested region of way kambas sumatra to diversify our carbon reduction effort, making our total trees to reach 3,300. and yes, we will continue planting.
